Notes/Bio

I am part of two initiatives at Brooklyn College/CUNY that are seeking to make the college more sustainable: one focuses on the curriculum and academic programs, the other on the physical campus itself and both seek to further relationships with community groups throughout the borough. I also have worked with the Right to the City coalition and Social Forums in the US and Brazil. My research is in the area of participatory democracy, with respect to local governments and economic organizations, especially with those that fit within the Solidarity Economy framework.

BACKGROUND

Cities are assuming an active role in nuclear abolition and climate protection initiatives. Over 900 mayors have signed the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, pledging to work to implement the Kyoto Protocol in their own communities.

Future Cities 2009 follows on a similar, smaller conference hosted by Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie last October. For the details on that event, click here.
